Play is vital to our mental wellbeing, physical health and personal interactions - take a class and learn a new skill, meet your friends on our many playgrounds and at special events and visit our recreation centers to get fit and stay healthy. A variety of fun activities are planned for citizens and visitors of all ages and abilities. Some of our July offerings and adventures are listed below. Aquatics


Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for July/August classes is open June 28-July 7. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center, online or by calling 757-259-4185.

U.S. Masters Adult Swim Program: Triathletes (ages 18+)
Tuesdays/Thursdays, July 25-Aug. 17, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
$80/session; $75 for JC/W residents

Email USMS.org to join program before enrolling. Must show current card to register. Crave technique help to improve the swimming portion of a triathlon? Don’t want to feel less important (not the fastest pool swimmers nor competitive swimmers but only swim freestyle or come to practice a couple of days a week? Then this class is for you! 107600-A

U.S. Masters Adult Swim Program: Fitness Swimmers (ages 18+)
Tuesdays/Thursdays, July 25-Aug. 17, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
$80/session; $75 for JC/W residents

Fitness swimmers want a coach who will help them meet their fitness objectives. Swimmers may not understand the typical swimming language (such as repeat 100s, go on the next top, etc.) and can easily feel intimidated. Are you interested in competing and would do so with encouragement. 107600-B

Before/After School/Summer Programs

REC Connect
Need summer camp and before-and-after school programs for your child? Registration is underway! The program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both Summer Camp 2017 and the Before and After School 2017-18 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to date received and space availability. Weekly registration fees apply. Forms can be picked up and then returned by mail or dropped off at the James City County Recreation, the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, the Freedom Park Interpretive Center or the Satellite Services Office in Toano.  Please allow up to seven business days for processing. Busy Bodies – Toddler Fitness Fun (ages 3-5)

Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening & Blood Pressure Check, Free!
Saturday, July 8, 9 a.m.-noon

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Stop by to take the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Risk paper test and discuss your results with an RN. This assessment is based on individual risk factors. Inclusion/Therapeutic Recreation

Want to spend a fun day with your child fishing from the shores at Little Creek Reservoir Park? Let the Warhill Fishing Club teach you and your child the fundamentals of fishing. All equipment provided.

Interpretive Paddle (ages 16+) Free!
Monday, July 10, 6-8 p.m.
James City County Marina

Nature Musings & Missives (ages 18+) New! Free!

Do you enjoy the natural world, and express those feelings through written word or art? Visit the Freedom Park Interpretive Center on the first Sunday of every month to share your nature poetry, prose, artwork, photography or anything else that inspires you! Come to share, or just to listen! Light refreshments provided.

Old & New Garden Favorites – If I Knew Then What I Know Now (ages 18+)
Saturday, July 15, 10-11:30 a.m.
Freedom Park
Assistant Director of Gardens and Grounds for The College of William and Mary (W & M), John McFarlane, will talk about his favorite plants and local garden treasures from the Williamsburg area and the W & M campus. He’ll share gardening insights from his 35+ years as a Virginia Horticulturist and his experience at W & M. During his 24 years working at the college, his department received numerous Arbor Day Beautification Awards. In 2010, he was honored with the Individual Arbor Day Award for his many contributions in enhancing the quality of the local environment. Info: email John at jdmcfa@wm.edu. Forest Explorers Walk & Talk (all ages)

Nature Program: Decomposers, 9-10 a.m.
Guided Walk: 10 a.m. – noon
Freedom Park
Join us on the first Saturday of every month this fall for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a nature program on a different topic each month, then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Campfire Social (all ages) New! Free!

Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Come celebrate summer with a good old fashioned campfire gathering at Chickahominy Riverfront Park! Enjoy s’mores, activities, storytelling and more around the campfire overlooking beautiful Gordon Creek. Caring for Animals (all ages)
Saturday, July 22, 10-11 a.m.
Williamsburg Botanical Garden, Freedom Park
Do you want to learn some helpful ways to care for dogs, cats and other animals? Be prepared to fall in love with some adorable adoptable animals. The Heritage Humane Society will help children learn about proper care, treatment, training and safety concerns with domestic animals. Space is limited; please register by emailing wbgkids@gmail.com. A $5 donation to help the garden grow is appreciated.

Park to Park Bicycle Tour
Saturday, July 15, 8 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park (CRP)
Register now for this annual self-guided bicycle tour! Choose from a family ride (ride as little or as much as you’d like), 15 miles, 30 miles or the Half Century ride (50 miles)! The 50-mile ride includes visits to Veterans Park (formerly Mid County), Powhatan Creek Trail, Freedom Park (FP), Little Creek Reservoir Park and Upper County Park. Cool off after your ride in the CRP pool. Fee includes refreshments, pool admittance, maps, support vehicles to help out tired riders and lunch! Preregistration forms available at local bike shops, the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park, Satellite Services in Toano or online at jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation.
