Investigations

Responsibilities

The Criminal Investigations Unit ensures that offenders are identified, apprehended and held accountable for their crimes. This unit legally charges and presents evidence in court and investigates cases that require special expertise or more flexibility due to their complex or geographical considerations. This unit is organized into the following sections:

  • Juvenile crimes
  • Crime against people
  • Property crimes
  • Economic crimes
  • Narcotics/vice crimes
  • Warrants and fugitives
  • Property control
  • Forensics
  • Cold cases

Investigators work with victims, witnesses and many other agencies to provide a positive impact on the community. We also partner with several local, state and federal task forces to conduct multi-jurisdictional investigations throughout the region.

Crime Line

The Department has been part of the Peninsula Crime Line since 1984. Since then, numerous James City County cases have been solved and arrests made due to caller's tips. The Peninsula Crime Line has paid out more than $22,000 in rewards for James City County cases since we have been a member. All money paid out for rewards comes from private citizen and business donations.

Callers to the Crime Line may remain anonymous, do not have to testify in court and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if the information leads to an arrest. James City Crime Line number is 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or go to the website for the Peninsula Crime Line.
